Gonzaga College Prep's Nate Britt is one of two 2013 commits for the Tar Heels.

Over the course of the college season, Five-Star will be on the grind, gathering recruiting intelligence for some of the nation's premier programs -- outlining each team's current roster and program needs, commitments and signees, and top recruiting targets for the 2012, 2013 and 2014 classes.

Today, we'll peek inside the UNC war room and answer the following questions: What are the team's immediate and longer-term needs? Who are the Tar Heels after? Which players have already decided to take their talents to Chapel Hill?

Current Roster and Program Needs:

Immediate Needs – 2012

  • With the Tar Heels set to loose frontcourt players Harrison Barnes, John Henson and Tyler Zeller to the NBA Draft, they have somewhat addressed their needs with the additions of Brice Johnson, an athletic forward who could be a smaller version of Henson, and big man Joel James. In the backcourt, Kendall Marshall could also go pro, but both Dexter Strickland and Leslie McDonald should return OK from injuries. P.J. Hairston and Reggie Bullock will both be asked to score a lot more assuming both return.

Longer Term Needs – 2013

  • The Heels need a big-time scoring wing in this class and are targeting Julius Randle, the No. 3 player in the class behind Jabari Parker and Nerlens Noel. Randle could change the whole dynamic of the Carolina team in 2013, but of course he has a number of elite suitors. Virginia wing Troy Williams has the Heels among his Final Four, along with Kentucky, Georgetown and Villanova.
  • Carolina also has point guard Nate Britt and big man Isaiah Hicks on board for 2013, with Britt saying he's looking forward to playing with 2012 point guard commit Marcus Paige.

2014 Targets

  • Dominique Collier, 6'1" PG, Denver (Colo.) East
  • Isaiah Whitehead, 6'4" SG, Brooklyn (N.Y.) Lincoln
  • Theo Pinson, 6'5" SG, Greensboro (N.C.) Wesleyan Christian
  • Andrew Wiggins, 6'6" SG, Huntington (W.V.) Prep
  • Wayne Selden, 6'6" SG, Tilton (N.H.) School
  • Noah Vonleh, 6'7", SF, New Hampton (N.H.)
  • Justin Jackson, 6'6" SF, Spring (TX) Homeschool Christian Youth
  • Caleb Martin, 6'6" SF, Mockville (N.C.) Davie County
