Gabe York's 'Zona-Bound

Following a stellar Adidas Invitational performance, Gabe York commits to the Wildcats

It's been a wild week for Compton Magic's Gabe York. The 6-1 scoring guard strung together multiple superstar performances against some of the nation’s top competition in the Adidas Invitational, highlighted by a 46-point outburst against No.15 Indiana Elite.

As if that wasn’t enough for one week, he recently committed to play college basketball at the University of Arizona, joining a long list of talented guards that have given the Wildcats the moniker of “Point Guard U.”

York’s summer coach Etop Udo-Ema of the Compton Magic said, “Gabe is a perfect fit in that mold of an Arizona guy. Those guys are sling guards, small guys that can score and that is what Gabe is. The system is perfect for Gabe. He will be one of the better shooters there, if not the best.”

When asked which 'Zona standout his game compares to most, York responded, “Gilbert Arenas; because I am more of a scoring guard and I'm taller than traditional point guards. I am a little more explosive than he was, but I am definitely a scoring guard.”

Udo-Ema has been coaching York since he was in 8th grade and had this to say, “His offensive skill package is ridiculous. He can shoot long-range, mid-range, floaters, and can get to the hoop. He can do it all offensively. I definitely see him as a McDonald’s All-American guy, although for west coast kids it is a little harder because most of the media attention is in the east.”

Now that this week's over, York can focus on the upcoming year. “Now it's time for me to work with my high school team. They are the best group of guys I could ask for and now that my decision is done I can devote all of my time to being a good captain and winning the state tournament. Throughout the next year, I will be working on my defense and ball-handling, specifically, which I have been doing and I am making good progress," York stated.

As his performance at Adidas Invitational showed, Arizona fans have a reason to be excited.  When asked what his goals at the next level were, York replied, “I want to start as a freshman, help the team in any way possible and get that national championship. We will have a really great basketball team so those goals are really possible.”

Arizona fans better get their popcorn ready because Gabe York is ready to add his name to the long lineage of standouts that define "Point Guard U."
